The number of people who die in accidents, and of heart attacks, account for a high proportion of the total number of deaths in the UK each year.
Heart attack
Heart and circulatory disease is the UK’s biggest killer, around 146,000 people have heart attacks every year, one in three of these people will die before they reach hospital.
Accidents in the home
Approximately 4,000 people die and 2.7 million are injured and need hospital treatment as a result of an accident in the home.
Road accidents
In 2008 there were just under 231,000 casualties from road accidents reported to the police, 2,538 people were killed.
Burns
Around 175,000 people attend accident and emergency for treatment to burns every year. An average of 300 people die from their burns.
Drowning
There are over 500 water related fatalities in the UK every year, most of these are thought to be cases of accidental drowning.
A majority of drownings happen in the summer months and occur at inland locations when people slip or fall from the land or structures over water.
Electricity
There are over 30 deaths and nearly 4,000 injuries from accidents in the home caused by electricity each year.
Poisoning
Poisoning accounts for more than 100,000 hospital admissions in the UK each year. This includes accidental poisoning, which is particularly common in young children, and over-doses.
The number of deaths from drug poisoning, from both legal and illegal drugs, has increased in recent years. In 2008, 2,075 men and 853 women died as a result of drug poisoning.
